Summary
In its purist sense the term “efficiency” refers to the ratio of inputs and outputs. Energy efficiency on a technical level is the relationship between the energy consumed and the output produced by that energy, often called “energy services”, for example the number of miles travelled for a gallon of fuel. Increasing energy efficiency means using either less energy to get the same level of energy services, or maintaining the same level of energy services, but using less energy.
